OpTek Systems, headquartered in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, UK is a global supplier of precision laser micromachining equipment and services, providing solutions across a wide range of applications and industrial sectors.

OpTek Systems domination of the market for laser termination of optical fibers for telecom and datacom applications has helped to fuel the growth that has been recognized with a second Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade.

An increase in demand for low cost-cost optical cables (e.g. USB4 & Thunderbolt) for use in a new generation of optical data communication is helping to fuel substantial growth in OpTek’s export business.  The need for ever-greater data transfer speeds, coupled with the requirement to minimize network power consumption favors the use of optical over the more conventional electrical signals.  This trend is creating an opportunity to equip the cable manufacturers with the tool required to terminate the optical connections for future production, which is expected to reach 10’s billion units over the coming years.

OpTek Systems proprietary and patented LaserCleave™ technology is at the heart of a family of tools designed around optical connector production.   The LaserCleave™ niche, in combination with OpTek’s broader laser micromachining operations, continues to provide growth for the business and drive exceptional export performance.

OpTek Systems has delivered year on year revenue growth since it was formed at the turn of the millennium.  Since winning the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for the first time in 2011, the export business has doubled again, reflecting significant growth in US and Asian markets.  Since 2011 OpTek has augmented its overseas operations, adding offices on the US West Coast and facilities in Hong Kong and Dongguan, China.

“Being recognized with a second Queen’s Award for Enterprise is a great honor”, said Mike Osborne, Founder and Technical Director at OpTek Systems. “International trade is central to our business and this award recognizes the investments we’ve made in developing our network and the hard work and dedication of all our staff and partners.”
